The United States is now nakedly exposed to contingent events for another 3.5 years, until Bush leaves office. Mediocre Republican minds and a philosophical antipathy to government intervention underpin this situation. Intelligence and planning will not be applied to anticipate and ameliorate future diasters; we just have to sit back and absorb them.
What will be next? My sense is a pandemic, possibly involving the much-talked-about bird flu virus or a variation. The flu vaccination fuck-ups last winter and the general Republican hostility to science and good government point to this. We've still got 3.5 years to go. Comments >> (1 comment) by bob h
It is not difficult to imagine the following events coming to a head in the near future:
Crude at $100 leading to $3.50 gasoline at the pump and an economic contraction. Failure to achieve Iraqi constitution and the dissolution of the country into civil war by militias. Continued American combat losses by increasingly proficient insurgent roadside bombers. Indictments of Rove, Libby, et. al. by Fitzgerald, with potential imputation of fraud by administration on war justification claims. With Bush at 33% approval, might not some people be entertaining the thought of short-circuiting his presidency via impeachment? Comments >> (2 comments) by bob h
Hearing of the terrible losses suffered by Ohio and Georgia reserve units in Iraq, the question arises in my mind whether the Texas Guard and reserve units are pulling their weight there. Is it possible they are being sheltered, and wouldn't that be something? Would you put it past Bush?
An item in the Harper's index some time ago suggested that this is the case, but I do not know how to go about getting updated data. We really ought to check this out, because favoritism to Texas would be truly explosive at this point. Comments >> (4 comments) |
