Living in Europe, I'm awake before most of you so I just thought you'd like to see/hear what the rest of the world is saying ;)

You know I'm a curious little cat and living very far away from the United States (both culturally and physically) and "watching" the campaigning for president just gets stranger and stranger to me.
So I thought I'd do a little research and see what I could see, sort of a self-educating little "tour" and well, you're welcome to join me ;) Read more... (1 comment, 1553 words in story) by soj
Well as you know, I've been on the hunt for positive things. So here is one below the fold. It's what I would love to see ALL true democracies engage in.

This isn't going to be one of those well-researched diaries with a coherent "point" and lots of links to back it up.
Folks, I need your help. I need your opinions, your thoughts and a whole big dose of your wisdom. Read more... (7 comments, 914 words in story) by soj
I am writing this in response to Boo's front page article Some Principles. And since I've got tomorrow off (as do most of you, I assume), I've got time to do it and it seems appropriate.
First a few words about Boo. I've been reading his stuff over at the "orange place" for about gosh, four years now? A long time. And I always admired his writing and when he set up his own website I was quite honored to get an email informing me of the fact. And he's certainly been a tireless campaigner for all the stuff I know I could NEVER do, all the political analysis of seats, the really in-depth articles about important issues and the activist stuff. And he's done a great job of keeping his website viable and pretty much completely "civilized", which is just about impossible in this day and age. So long story short, in no way am I criticizing the PERSON nor the work he's done. I respect him greatly and what follows is just my response to it. Got it? Read more... Ok now before we get to the solutions of the problems laid out in my original diary, it's time to flesh out more of the history of money itself.

Gosh I hate to do this. It's Friday and if you've got a lick of sense, go read something else. Heck it's Friday night and even I should be out doing something else other than writing this. But this has been on my mind for days and days and I've got to get it down on "paper".
I've been watching the Ron Paul candidacy from afar here, across the ocean. And it's been very appealing to me. It's been very appealing to a lot of people I respect as well and I've been watching a lot of his videos of debates and town hall meetings to try and figure out why. Read more... Well once again the western media is up to its old tricks. By "old tricks" I actually mean "completely unable to report simple facts".

I know what follows is going to be a little depressing. But I don't think it has to be. I think it can be inspirational - sometimes once you know what the problems are then you can begin to identify and discuss what you want to DO about them.
I won't cover Pakistan because it's getting a ton of coverage now, nor Iraq. You already know what's going on in Iraq. Everything below refers to just the last week. Read more... (14 comments, 972 words in story) by soj
You hear about it on the news every day. You use it to transport yourself around town. All of the goods and services in our lives are dependent on it. Wars are fought over it, governments are toppled because of it and gigantic fortunes are amassed from it. But how much do you know about oil aka petroleum?

Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in the maelstrom of political scandals, ideological contests and overall outrage and dismay at the way life has become in these United States in today's era.
To understand where we are, sometimes it is worth taking a look at where we've been. And to do that, I'm going to tell two stories, both set in the tiny Central American nation of Guatemala. But it is actually a story about the United States of America. Read more... (8 comments, 2144 words in story) by soj
Well there's more going on in the worldwide news that is completely NOT being reported on. It's almost 1am here but I thought I'd get this out real quick.

You know sometimes it drives me absolutely bonkers when so-called "journalists" fail to report on obvious, easily-discoverable and CRITICAL facts about current events.
The looming war or strike or conflict with Iran is clearly something that affects the entire globe. Yet journalists consistently forget to mention something absolutely critical about Iran's potential to acquire/develop/build nuclear weapons. Read more... (13 comments, 1345 words in story) by soj
It's a cold and rainy, overcast day here in Romania which seems appropriate because a man I've had the privilege to know has died.
Tomorrow I will go to his funeral in a small village near here so we can lay him to rest. But here today I'd like to celebrate his life. Read more... (1744 words in story)
